Winchmore Hill railway station is in Station Road (which, before the arrival of the railway, was known as "Middle Lane"), Winchmore Hill in the London Borough of Enfield in North London, England, in Travelcard Zone 4. It is 14 km (8¾ miles) north of Moorgate on the Hertford Loop Line. The station, and all trains serving it are operated by First Capital Connect. Originally, upon opening in 1871, the station building was almost identical to that at neighbouring Palmers Green. However, in 1965 the northbound side of the building was demolished due to subsidence.^[2] In the 1970s the station boasted, on its southbound platform, a small newsagent and sweet shop, just beyond the base of the stairs down to the platform, but by 1980 this shop had been dismantled.

Services

The service from the station runs to Moorgate on weekdays until about 10.00pm, and into London Kings Cross after 10.00pm Mondays to Fridays and all day on Saturdays and Sundays. Normally the service uses class 313 EMUs, as these are the only units cleared to Moorgate.

The typical off-peak service is three trains per hour to Moorgate, and three trains per hour to Hertford North, with one per hour extended to Letchworth Garden City via Stevenage.

Future developments

• Oyster pay and go will arrive at this station on the confirmed date of 2 January 2010, this will finally allow customers to make use of the oyster machines at the station but are not currently in use.^[3]
